ASD, or autism spectrum disorder now affects 1 in every 68 children. While ASD has received increased attention, methods and techniques for staff to use at camp or after school programs are not always available. This training provides an overview of autism spectrum disorder and introduces camp counselors to effective strategies when providing care. The training also provides background information about ASD as well as practical information for caring for children, teens, or adults on the spectrum. Camp counselors and after school staff will learn important information to prepare them for the children or teens that they will encounter, and will provide helpful tips about how to plan ahead of time for their interactions. This training also provides helpful tips on how to check the environment for potential hazards, how to be proactive with any problem behaviors that may arise, and discusses emergency prevention and awareness techniques. It also reviews overnight stays, how to encourage your camper or student to get involved socially, and much more.
